It is nothing but happiness when a dog is brought home on the first time. The hype, the hugging, the playfulness- it is something nice. I have not forgotten my initial week of being a dog owner. I felt that I was ready until reality struck. Mashed slippers, insomnia, and an extremely disoriented me!
There is nothing to worry about in case you have just started. It is very much normal to make mistakes. Actually, no dog owner could not be there. It is only important to learn about them and provide your pet with a better life.
We are going to list 10 of the most common mistakes that new dog owners make, but in a friendly easy to understand manner, as I would explain to my friend.
1. Failing to Research Enough Before Purchasing a Dog.
Most individuals choose a dog depending on appearance or the fad. This adorable breed or I saw in Instagram, sounds like it.
I made this mistake too. I was not aware that my dog would consume a lot of time and energy a day.
Various dogs do not need the same things:
• Some need long walks
• Some need regular grooming
• There are those which require full attention.
Unless your way of life is compatible with the those of your dog, you will be in difficulties together.
Basic tips: Research Before you adopt a dog, do some research about what the dog is like, how much energy it needs, and how it needs to be cared for.
2. Neglect of Training in the Early Days.
Many of the new owners believe that there is time to train. they say let the puppy have his time.
However, this is where the problems start. When dogs are young, they learn quite fast. By not training them early enough they can even develop bad habits such as:
• Jumping on people
• Biting furniture
• Not listening to commands
Training does not need to be difficult. Even simple instructions are huge in difference.
👉 Understand simple: 'sit', 'stay' and 'come' are a good start.
3. Feeding Whatever You Eat
This is among the greatest errors. We are tempted to share our food, particularly when we see those innocent looks by dogs.
Dogs need:
• Simple, balanced food
• Proper portion sizes
• Consistent feeding times
👉 Do not take spicy, oily, and processed food.
4. Overfeeding as a Sign of Love
Food is another way that many people express their love. I also did that, I gave him extra treats, extra snacks, just to make my dog happy.
But too much food leads to:
• Weight gain
• Laziness
• Health problems later
Simultaneously, malnourishment is also destructive.
👉 Have a healthy eating schedule and adhere to a schedule.
5. Not Giving Enough Exercise
Dogs are active animals. It is not good to keep them locked inside the house throughout the day.
Without exercise, dogs may:
• Get bored
• Become destructive
• Gain unhealthy weight
Even a mere 20 - 30 minutes’ walk in a day will help them feel better and healthier.
Hint: walks and play time as a part of your routine is good for them.
6. Skipping Regular Vet Visits
With the new dog owners, most do not visit the vet until something is wrong.
It is always better to prevent than cure.
Regular vet visits help with:
• Vaccinations
• Health check-ups
• Early detection of issues
I got to know this through the bitter experience of missing a visit and having to worry about it at a later time.
👉 Have regular check-ups- keep yourself or your pet scheduled regularly, even when your dog is fine.
7. Poor Socialisation
Other dogs grow up without encountering new human beings and animals.
This can make them:
• Shy
• Fearful
• Sometimes aggressive
Socialisation is quite significant particularly during the initial months.
👉 Slowly introduce your dog to:
• New people
• Different environments
• Other friendly pets
This builds confidence and reduces fear.
8. Failure to be Consistent with Rules.
This is one thing that the majority does not realise.
One day you bring your dog into the bed. Next day you scold them for it. Of course, the dog becomes confused.
Repetition and consistency enable dogs to learn. When the rules continue to change, they are not clear of what is required.
👉 Decide your rules early:
• Where the dog can sleep
• What it can chew
• Where it can go
And obey all those rules daily.
9. Failure to Pay attention to Grooming and Hygiene.
Grooming is not just about appearance as many of the new owners believe. But it is really concerning health.
Without proper grooming:
• Dirt builds up
• Skin issues can develop
• Shedding increases
Basic grooming practices comprise:
• Regular brushing
• Occasional bathing
• Cleaning ears and nails
👉 You do not require anything multifaceted only routine care.
10 . Expecting Instant Results
This was my biggest mistake.
I thought that my dog would grasp everything fast. At times, I got frustrated when he did not.
But the truth is:
Dogs take time to learn. Just like us.
They will:
• Make mistakes
• Forget commands
• Test your patience
👉 Be patient and consistent. Things will develop gradually, but they will develop.
Bonus: Its good If You Spend Quality Time with them.
It is not necessarily discussed, but it is significant.
Dogs do not only require food and shelter. They require your attention and time.
Even 15–20 minutes of:
• Playing
• Talking
• Sitting together
can strengthen your bond.
I have observed that during hectic days when I do not pay attention to my dog he either hush up or anxious. It is then that I remember--he is relying on me, not only to take care of him, but to company him also.
Final Thoughts ❤
As a first time dog owner, it is a learning process. You will do wrong--and all well.
What matters is:
• Learning from them
• Improving daily
• Looking after your dog in a happy and healthy life.
As in my own experience, nothing like that the more one makes out of it, the more you will get returned in love, devotion and all those small happy factors worth it all.
